The Enchanted Sri Lanka Journey is our most popular short itinerary — a perfectly paced 8 day / 7 night private tour that covers Sri Lanka's most iconic destinations without feeling rushed. It is the ideal choice for first-time visitors, couples and families with limited holiday time who want to see the Cultural Triangle, experience hill country and finish with days on the south coast beach.
The route runs north to south: from Colombo airport to Sigiriya in the Cultural Triangle, south to Kandy for temples and culture, up into tea country around Ella, then down to the coast at Mirissa for the beach finale. This north-to-south flow avoids doubling back and makes the most efficient use of your 8 days.
Every day in this itinerary is private. Your own driver-guide, your own vehicle and your own daily schedule. Want to spend a second morning at Nine Arches Bridge in Ella? Want to skip one stop and head straight to the beach? Simply tell your driver — the plan adapts around you.
Your private driver-guide meets you at Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport arrivals with a name board. Transfer to your hotel in Negombo (30 minutes) or Colombo (45 minutes). Depending on your arrival time, explore Negombo's fishing village, Dutch canal, colonial church and lively Fish Market. Overnight in Negombo.
After breakfast, drive north-east to Sigiriya (approximately 3.5 hours). En route, stop at Dambulla Cave Temple — a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring five magnificent cave temples adorned with over 150 Buddha statues and ancient frescoes dating to the 1st century BC. Continue to Sigiriya and check in. Overnight in Sigiriya.
Morning climb of Sigiriya Rock Fortress — a 5th-century palace built atop a 200-metre volcanic plug. Pass the Lion's Paw gateway, view the famous Sigiriya frescoes (the "Cloud Maidens") and reach the summit plateau for panoramic views across the jungle canopy. Afternoon at leisure — optional village cycle tour or Pidurangala Rock hike for the best sunset view of Sigiriya. Overnight in Sigiriya.
Drive south to Kandy (approximately 2.5 hours), Sri Lanka's last royal capital and a UNESCO World Heritage City. Visit the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of Buddhism's most revered shrines. Explore the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya — 147 acres of tropical gardens with an iconic avenue of Royal Palms. Optional evening: traditional Kandyan cultural dance performance. Overnight in Kandy.
Drive through the spectacular tea-producing highlands to Nuwara Eliya — "Little England" at 1,900 metres. Visit a tea factory to see how Ceylon tea is made and taste fresh-brewed tea with views over the plantations. Continue to Ella (approximately 1.5 hours). Walk to Nine Arches Bridge at dusk for the iconic viaduct view. Overnight in Ella.
Full day in Ella. Morning hike to Ella Rock (3–4 hours return) for panoramic hill country views — one of Sri Lanka's finest hikes. Or, for a shorter morning, walk to Little Adam's Peak (1 hour return, easier grade). Afternoon: relax in Ella's charming village, visit the Ravana Falls and explore the local cafes and craft stalls. Evening: look out for the famous Ella Gap sunset. Overnight in Ella.
Drive from Ella down to the south coast to Mirissa (approximately 3 hours). Mirissa is a crescent-shaped bay with calm, swimmable water and a relaxed beach town atmosphere. Afternoon: swim, snorkel or simply relax on the beach. Optional evening: sunset boat cruise or dinner at a beachside restaurant. Overnight in Mirissa.
Morning at leisure in Mirissa or a quick stop in Galle Fort (1 hour from Mirissa) — a perfectly preserved Dutch colonial fort with boutique hotels, cafes and ocean views from the ramparts. Your driver then takes you to Colombo Airport (approximately 2.5 hours from Galle) for your departure flight. End of tour.
