Yala National Park is the most visited wildlife reserve in Sri Lanka and one of the best places in the world to see leopards. The park covers 979 km² and is divided into several blocks — Block 1 (Yala Strict Nature Reserve) is the most popular and has the highest leopard density per square kilometre of any protected area on earth. Safari jeeps enter at dawn and dusk when the cats are most active. Expect also to see elephants, buffalo, mugger crocodiles, painted storks, peacocks and, with luck, a sloth bear. A half-day Yala safari lasts 3–4 hours; a full day safari covers more of the park at a relaxed pace.

Best for: Guaranteed elephant sightings, water buffalo, birds

Location: Southern Sri Lanka, between Ella and the coast

Best time: Year-round (one of the most reliable parks for wildlife)

Udawalawe is the best national park in Sri Lanka for close-up elephant sightings. The park is home to over 600 resident wild elephants — herds regularly cross the open grasslands in front of safari vehicles, including calves just days or weeks old. Unlike Yala's dense scrub, Udawalawe's open savannah landscape makes elephants easy to see and photograph. The park is positioned on the route between Ella and the south coast, making it a natural addition to almost any Sri Lanka itinerary. A half-day safari typically yields 20–50+ elephant sightings.

Best for: The Elephant Gathering (July–October), birdlife

Location: North Central Province, near Sigiriya

Best time: July to October for the Gathering; year-round for general wildlife

Minneriya National Park is famous for one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles: The Elephant Gathering. Between July and October, hundreds of wild Asian elephants — sometimes over 300 in a single gathering — congregate around the ancient Minneriya Tank reservoir as the surrounding grasslands dry out. It is the largest gathering of Asian elephants on earth. Even outside the peak gathering season, the park offers reliable elephant sightings along with spotted deer, purple-faced langur monkeys and prolific bird life. Conveniently located near Sigiriya, making it easy to combine with Cultural Triangle visits.

Best for: Leopards, sloth bears, secluded wilderness experience

Location: North-west Sri Lanka, near Puttalam

Best time: February to October

Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest national park and one of its most pristine wilderness areas. The park is defined by its natural lakes (locally called "villus") — over 60 of them — that attract leopards, sloth bears, elephants and a spectacular range of water birds. Because Wilpattu is less visited than Yala, you often have large stretches of the park entirely to yourself. The experience is more authentic and wild than the busier parks, with a greater sense of genuine wilderness. Wilpattu is best added to the 16 day itinerary as a dedicated stop on the way down from Negombo.
